Artist Of The Month – April, 2017!
Yo spring, you’re looking mighty fine! Yep, fantasy has become reality and those cold winter days are now flailing behind us as we embrace the warmth and good vibes of the springtime. With the kick-off to the festival season just days away, artists are re-charging their USB sticks with fresh tunes, whilst ravers are dusting off their favourite pair of ‘festival Nikes’ and loading up on vitamins to sustain them through this heavy festive season!
The winter has been tough for many of you (not for me, I’ve had summer for the past year and a half), but luckily the creativity of many producers has allowed us to maintain that pep in our step. Concocting tasteful experiments during hibernation season, many artists have unveiled impressive hits that have drastically changed their careers and our artist(s) of the month for April are a prime example of an act that’s ploughed away to reach supreme status.
This particular duo has a knack for creating monstrous kicks that shake venues harder than a category 9 earthquake and can master Psy basslines that put Astrix to shame. Behold and embrace our ‘chosen ones’ for the month – Sub Zero Project!
Consisting of brossifs in crime Nigel Coppen and Thomas Velderman, Sub Zero Project burst onto the scene back in 2014 when they dropped their debut release on Dirty Workz’s Anarchy platform. Now, it’s often that newcomers experience the struggle of creating a captivating and unique signature style – however, Sub Zero Project struck gold by developing a powerful trademark style. Enclosing around their most valuable asset, the SZP primarily focuses on their emblematic, Earth-shattering kicks.
Following up to their debut, things quickly escalated for the pair, who in 2015 achieved hit status on more than one occasion. F*cking shit up with tracks such as “Funky Shit,” “This Is Madness” with Atmozfears and “Hit The Funk” amongst others, it became clear that Sub Zero Project clearly stood out from the rest of their talent cohort.
After proving their worth by presenting a disparate, superior sound, the bookings began to flow in Sub Zero Project, who added Loudness, Penoze, Reverze, QAPITAL, Rebirth Festival, Emporium, Intents Festival, Defqon.1 and even Tomorrowland to their agenda. From achieving a high standard in their productions to totally smashing it during live performances, Sub Zero Project had officially broken into new territory, where they were regarded as a ‘full package’ act.
In 2016, the pair proved their versatility by collaborating with cheese-kings Da Tweekaz to create funky crossover tune “DRKNSS.” Generating an overwhelming response from the general public, this track pushed their usual boundaries, thus opening them up to prospective SZP supporters. Just when you thought that this was a one-off, another tasteful crossover was in the works – this time with Scantraxx youngster Devin Wild. Titled “Meltdown,” the dudes tore down all barriers with this sonic masterpiece.
Other mentionable releases from 2016 also include their killer bootleg of Armin van Buuren’s “In and Out Of Love” and their two collaborations with Sub Sonik, “Headbanger” and “Raise Your Fist.”
Just when fans and artists alike thought that Sub Zero Project had reached their pinnacle, the duo dropped an immense, game-changing hit that’d inevitably throw a spanner in the raw Hardstyle game. Yes – I’m indeed talking about their funky, Psy-inspired banger “The Project.” This track instantly tore the Hardstyle scene a new one! I mean, come on, even Headhunterz dropped this spicy tune during one of his sets. With this release already being dubbed one of 2017’s most monumental tracks, it became clear that SZP literally had a goldmine on their hands that would manifest into a hectic event agenda, booming fan-base and on-going support from the scene’s titans.
From a single track, ‘The Project’ continued to evolve into a revolutionary new musical project that entailed exclusive live-acts, surprising new music and an entire new look for the duo! Thomas and Nigel have been rather busy cooking up some peppery new beats which fans will absolutely devour this upcoming season!
Wanna jump on board with THE PROJECT?! You can catch Sub Zero Project at Rebirth Festival, XXlerator RAW, Beat the Bridge, CRAFT, Loudfest, Intents Festival, Emporium Festival, Defqon.1 (where they’ll tear apart the colossal BLUE area) and many, many more!
Congratulations to Sub Zero Project for taking out our ‘artist of the month’ title for April! We hope to catch up with them very soon ;).
