AAN’s Picks – Our Top 10 Releases Of May
Festivals, releases, albums and more! May has been an absolutely huge month in the hardstyle scene and we are here to give you a little lowdown on the very best tracks to tear apart festivals! With so many amazing releases this month of such a great quality, we had an incredibly hard task to narrow our list down to our top 10 – but we did it! Featuring tracks by Bass Modulators, Devin Wild, new talent Demi Kanon and more – here are our top picks from the month of May!
10. Frequencerz feat. MC Nolz – Warrior (Emporium 2015 Anthem)
Now this is a little different to what we usually expect from Frequencerz. Not so many repetitive ‘dying cat’ screeches, but this track packs a huge anthemic atmosphere and that’s something that really stood out to me in a positive way. The vocals by MC Nolz are not the usual bad-ass vocal, but they really go to lengths to tell a story and well, Frequencerz really hit the nail on the head with the melody too! We really hope to see this atmospheric approach in the future from Frequencerz, bravo guys!

9. Neilio feat. Miss Judged – Trapped
Feelio… (oh sorry, hmmph) Neilio, has had an impressive few years and with the ever-improving quality and catchiness of his tracks, this young producer is on his way to the top – and fast! His newest “Trapped,” featuring vocals by Miss Judged is another one to put in the book of feels and is also not only one of the standouts from this month but one of Neilio’s biggest standout tracks in general. With his huge melodies and deep storylines, Neilio just goes to show everytime that hardstyle doesn’t have to be raw to be powerful!

8. Bass Modulators – Oxygen
Talk about emotion! The vocals in this track make shivers run and up and down my spine and have the ability to reduce even the toughest souls to tears. You may have thought that “Radiance” and “Rocked Up” were lucky scores by the mighty Bass Modulators, but these melodic geniuses have proven that they are tearing apart mainstages for a good reason! Their new track “Oxygen” packs a melodic structure and purely beautiful atmosphere that will have every listener immersed in the ‘feels.’ Accompanied with the track is an amazing video containing astonishing footage from this year’s edition of Hard Bass, reminding us that music in one’s life is just as important as oxygen…

7. Phrantic – By My Side
If Swiss producer Phrantic is known for one thing, it’s individuality and an impressive level of ‘style’ in his productions. This track takes more of a minimalistic approach to hardstyle, but its still a great one to pump out loud when running around the house naked and singing the vocals about that special someone (yes, I did that). It may not be a standardised track with a kick, screech and “motherfucker, fuck the police, yeah!” vocal in it, but it’s creative, fresh and is more than just a two dimensional song. So strip down, play it loud and immerse yourself in something a little different!

6. Devin Wild – Device
Devin Wild is a name that everybody should keep on their radar because if this kid knows one thing, it’s how to produce some pretty kick-ass hardstyle. For an upcomer, it can be hard finding your feet and a signature sound that doesn’t draw too much inspiration from other producers, but I’m happy to say that this youngin is doing a great job establishing himself and his sound. The quirky atmosphere of this track is something that you don’t hear often and the combination of the different sounds is something that makes “Device” truly special. Keep up the great work Devin Wild!

5. B-Front – Blackness
Atmospheric hardstyle is on its way back and B-Front is pioneering the way! His latest track “Blackness” is one that packs an overwhelmingly mysterious and beautiful atmosphere, something that resonates throughout all of his productions. This track is for everyone – whether you love melodies or love the harder stuff, B-Front is a producer who has the ability to draw in all different species of listeners. The melody is so captivating and magical, it actually took me on a journey wandering through a dark enchanted forest, facing different evil things that I had to execute. Let your imagination run wild with this one and truly experience the storyline.

4. Sylence & Cyber – Each Other
Although these two have a slightly similar style, when they come together a place is created where true magic happens. Sylence and Cyber are two of the most respected upcoming names in the melodic spectrum and after a lot of releases from the both and many hours of hard work, the result of their collaboration “Each Other” is remarkable. This is definitely one of those tracks that you hear at a festival and instantly feel the urge to grab your best friend in an embracing hug and never let go. Good job guys, you got us wrapped up in a blanket of feels!

3. Adaro – Raggamuffin
Old-school vibes, hard kicks and a ruthless atmosphere is what really drew me into a love affair with this track. Although this track isn’t overly complicated, Adaro has proven that less is more and the result of “Raggamuffin” is a fucking awesome and underground sounding track. I was surprised to see that this track hasn’t gone as viral as I had expected, I mean, c’mon although it’s not as hard as the other stuff being produced, it has flavour and thought behind it and it undoubtedly goes off on the dancefloor.

2. Demi Kanon – Supersonic
It’s extremely rare to come across a newcomer’s track that exceeds the quality of artists who have been around for years. New kid on the “Lose Control” block Demi Kanon has proved his musical worthiness with his killer first release “Supersonic” which has wowed listeners around the globe. When I first heard this track for the first time I was instantly hooked – it had been a while since a melodic track like this touched me so deeply. The structure, the sounds and the storyline is what makes this track stand out from the pile of other ‘talent’ tracks and mind you, we would never just put any talent track as our #2 choice… I have high hopes for Demi Kanon and hope to hear a lot more from him in the future!

1. *WINNER* Ran-D feat. Skits Vicious – No Guts No Glory (Defqon.1 2015 Anthem)
It’s not another killer edition of Defqon.1 without one hell of an anthem and who better to do the honourable task than Ran-D? In my opinion, this anthem is one to keep in the books and cherish forever – what can I say, it’s so anthemish! Ran-D’s music isn’t traditionally for the faint-hearted and I was skeptical when I found out that he created this year’s anthem, but oh, the end result was so different to what I expected it to be. The uniquevocals represent the relentlessness of the festival itself and the carefree attitude that every individual has when walking through the gates of Defqon.1. No sign of any cheesiness or over-rawness, yet only perfection on every level can be heard and this is why this track is probably the going to keep its title as the biggest and best anthem of the season.
