“What’s your sign?” Astrology & the stars in Hard Dance music.

Aside from writing and occasionally engaging in the scene’s banter, a partial slice of our team at Alive At Night are very firm believers in the stars and other trippy happenings of the galaxy. From time to time, we like to lie on the grass during the night hours of festivals and stargaze and oh, we kind of find the concept of horoscopes stupidly accurate. But wait, how can the stars and position of the sun and weird things beyond our control determine some of our personality traits? In short (and in astrology terms), the position of the sun at your time of birth determines your ‘sun sign,’ commonly known as your ‘star sign.’ The sun is very important in the astrology world and is said to rule things such as willpower, ego and some fundamental personality traits.

Of course, a lot of other factors (and planets) come into play when it comes to shaping ones personality. In this article, we’re going to be giving you the 101 about the twelve signs and taking a little look at which signs artists in the Hard Dance scene fall under and some of the common characteristics. So for those who are overly-sceptical or very closed-minded to the concept of sun signs, I suggest you either shut this page or read on and see if you can somewhat relate.

Nevertheless, we’ll let you guys decide whether this is somewhat accurate or a load of shit. (FYI, we think it’s pretty accurate)

Aries (March 21 – April 19)

 
The zodiac year begins on March 21st, with the pioneering, exciting hot-blooded sign Aries. As the first sign of the zodiac, being #1 is top priority for Aries folks; they are fiercely competitive, ambitious, energetic and are born to innovate and bring life to an industry. It’s no surprise that two of the scene’s greatest MC’s (MC DL & Da Syndrome) fall under this category – they bring life to every party and are full of energy, which are typical strong-suits of Aries individuals. In a workplace, Aries would be the hyperactive person blasting loud music and annoying everybody in the office. They do however have their sensitive side and have a child-like, innocent essence at heart, making them very loving and loyal friends.

However, every sign has their down-falls and with Aries’ boiling hot-blood, they can be known to be self-centred, egotistical, impatient, hate being told what to do and tend to start things and not finish them. Their impulsive and quick decision-making can go either way and Aries tend to ‘talk now, think later,’ which tends to offend others from time to time.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

Taurus is typically known as a stable, dependable sign that thrive on being grounded and stable. Belonging to the Earth element, Taurus people are extremely focussed and do not like change; the unknown makes them nervous and worried. Taurus have immense perseverance, even when others give up they continue to tread on and see projects to the very end! They are also very reliable and look at situations from a practical angle like their fellow Earth signs.

One of Taurus’ most-known traits is how great they are with their finances; they like having security in everything in their life. They don’t like flashy or over-the-top things and prefer comfortable and creative settings. Their down-falls can be that they are self-indulgent, secretive, stubborn, lazy and oh, they tend to procrastinate!

Gemini (May 21 – June 20)

Gemini is an extremely interesting sign and as you can see below, a massive handful of Hard Dance artists are Gemini. This is because they are a very social and adaptable sign that tends to have an adamant interest in music and the arts. You may also notice that these artists are particularly known as inventive, extremely creative and tend to live in their own world.

Gemini people are expressive, quick-witted and are great communicators. They may talk your ear off from time-to-time, but saying that, they tend to have very valid and interesting arguments. They are known to be naturally curious about the world and like to research things, however Gemini are superficial and will form opinions on matter without diving into them and exploring them fully. This can lead them into thinking they know everything, which they usually do but their mind is too busy to be concerned with fine details. Routine and boredom are Gemini’s biggest fears.

With their great qualities, Gemini people can be extremely moody, impulsive, restless, devious, inconsistent and indecisive.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

Represented by the ‘crab’ Cancerians are best known as a very mysterious family-oriented sign who are challenging to get to know at first. Those born under the Cancer sign make great friends and family members; they are loyal, empathetic and extremely caring to people close to them. They are also generous, sentimental, creative and spontaneous individuals who thrive on having a loving family and tranquil, harmonious home. Like a crab with its shell, Cancer individuals usually display a cool and calm exterior, however beneath that they have a driving personality and are willing to come out of their shell when necessary. Being extremely intuitive, fellow crabs have excellent memory and can read people and situations extremely well which is a great trait to have in the music industry as they can usually see past fake fads and create a long-lasting career.

Also renowned for being an extremely protective sign, Cancer is also very emotional, possessive, unpredictable and sometimes very moody. From the perspective of other signs that aren’t emotionally ruled, Cancer’s down-fall can be being too sensitive or ‘sulky’ and they tend to not be very forgiving.

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

All hail the lion! Leo folk are known to be natural-born leaders; they are dramatic, creative, confident, dominant and won’t take second place. Leo also make very generous and loyal friends; they would do anything to stick up for their friends or family. They also love to be treated like a king or queen and enjoy being admired for their work. Being a fire sign, Leo thrive from enjoying life and are very magnetic in social situations; it’s extremely rare for a lion to sit in the background, they’re always in the spotlight! Lions/lionesses tend to also love having a luxurious lifestyle; they only want the best, which can cause lavish excessive spending habits as public image is important to them. Hardcore lady legend and fellow Leo Korsakoff is a prime example of this; at every performance she’s spotted in beautiful, well thought-out outfits that make her absolutely shine on stage!

With their bold confidence, open-heartedness and honesty Leo’s do have their downfalls; they can be self-involved, egotistical, melodramatic, impractical and insensitive to others at times, which is a trait that Fire signs in general tend to have.

Virgo (August 23 – September 22)

They may be the butt of our jokes, thanks to their perfectionist and practical attitude, but you may be able to learn a thing or two about hard work from your fellow Virgos. This Earth sign pay attention to the most miniscule details and their cautious attitude makes them one of the most thorough (and at times, frustrating) signs of the zodiac. They partake in life in a methodical manner and thrive on being conservative and organised. Virgo individuals don’t always particularly fit the ‘clean-freak’ stereotype, even if they are extremely messy, their goals, dreams and daily routines work around strictly defined points.

It’s actually no surprise that producers whose technique and sound design is amongst the best in the scene are Virgo; they sit there for hours perfecting the smallest details and no stone is left unturned for these guys. They are known to be very defined and precise, which you can probably hear in their music.

However, like every other sign, Virgo has their downfalls. They can be overly critical of others (and themselves), sometimes they are all work and no play, they worry a lot and their preciseness can be understood by others as uptight, pedantic or extremely annoying (Headhunterz is a prime example of this, no offence).

Libra (September 23 – October 22)

 To put it plainly, Libras are the diplomat of the zodiac; they do not tolerate injustice and prefer equality. They avoid getting involved in conflicts and prefer to keep the peace. Symbolic of the ‘scales,’ Libra individuals thrive on having balance and harmony in their life; they appear as very easy-going and chilled-out people, however under the surface they are intelligent and extremely creative, which are traits that are often overlooked by others. Collaboration and partnership is very important for Libra as they don’t enjoy being alone.

The down-fall of Libra is that they are painfully unreliable and tend to ‘float’ around a little. In music, they need somebody to keep them dedicated to a task, whether it is a manager or counterpart member of a duo they need someone to contribute, otherwise they will fall off course. Libra also don’t like hard work and can be extremely lazy to do the hard work required to climb the corporate ladder. Like their fellow air-signs, Libra are also terribly indecisive and tend to self-pity.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

Symbolised by the Scorpion, Scorpio individuals are known as the hypersexual, super passionate, all-around difficult and most misunderstood sign of the Zodiac. They are extremely independent, commanding, fierce, intense and driven, thus making great musicians. It’s no surprise that some of the scene’s greatest producers fall underneath the Scorpio sign; applying their passion and drive into a creative project is very rewarding for them. They are also very dedicated, passionate and loyal as well as ambitious, typically applying this forceful drive into success and finding purpose in life. They are not typically social butterflies; Scorpio are mysterious and complex people who thrive on alone time.

The down-side of Scorpio individuals is that they can be secretive, manipulative, jealous, resentful and greedy. I’m pretty sure the percentage of Scorpio people in prison is higher than any other sign, they make great murderers. With this being said, if Scorpio’s learn how to apply their turbulent passion and array of emotions into something productive, then they are more than capable to have a clean, happy conscience and positivity in their life.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

Sagittarius, are undoubtedly the sign most likely to burn their toast. They are risk-takers, extremely adventurous, exciting and intellectually stimulating. They also have no filter on their mouths, which can be offensive to some. Saggies are optimistic (sometimes too much) and tend to look at the bigger picture of things with a positive attitude, which in turn, attracts a lot of luck and good fortune to them. They are free as a bird and want to explore the world, gain wisdom, explore and not fret about emotions or feelings. Sagittarius individuals tend to be detached from emotions, they do not like to talk about their feelings, they simply experience them and move on. Sagittarius can be reckless, irresponsible and impatient; they will jump at a suggestion of something new before they weigh the advantages and disadvantages.

Sagittarians have a vibrant, expansive personality filled with curiosity and anticipation for the future, however they have problems with committing to things and tend to not finish projects at the sheer fact that it takes too long. They expect immediate results and this sometimes hinders their motivation to persevere. Saggies are also very inconsistent and their interest in things can be short-lived, making them less efficient than they can be.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)

Capricorn is practical and is considered to be the most serious sign of the zodiac, possessing an independence that enables significant progress both on the personal level and in business. Capricorn individuals are extremely resourceful, controlled, business-oriented and traditionally-minded when it comes to professionalism. They may seem dry, but this practical and responsible sign are extremely ambitious, patient and will accomplish their goals with flying colours every time. Capricorns have a very active mind and strong powers of concentration; however people born under this sign (like fellow Earth signs) can be really stubborn.

Capricorn-born have a hard time accepting others’ differences and feels the need to control people or to impose their traditionalist values. With their good intention to offer structure and organisation to others’ lives, this comes across as intrusive and dominating. Other weaknesses include closed-mindedness and reluctant to others’ contributions.

Floaty Aquarius, the wonderful water-bearer. Aquarius people are terrible with their phones, tend to disappear for short periods of time, but are one of the most creative and imaginative signs. They are deep thinkers, highly intellectual people who are able to see both sides without prejudice. Thriving on mental stimulation, Aquarius look at the world as a place filled with possibilities and opportunities.

Aquarius are filled with paradoxes and are interested in the opposite ends of the spectrum; they like to be alone, yet are social butterflies and like to experience both sides as they formulate new ideas with their forward thinking, active mind.

As beautiful and floaty Aquarius can be, they are also masters of manipulation and can justify anything they do or think. They also like ‘shock factor’ and can pick on the weak or dull-minded. Aquarians are also extremely detached, insensitive, sarcastic and rebellious.

Known as the most sensitive out of all zodiac signs, Pisces individuals are extremely selfless, caring, compassionate and accepting people. This friendly sign also have incredible artistic abilities and have a special connection with anything that requires creative thought. As their ruling planet is Neptune, Pisces are more intuitive than others and are especially connected to music, revealing musical preferences in early stages of their life. It’s no surprise that a handful of great producers are Piscean.

Despite being the most tolerant of all the zodiac signs, Pisces have their downfalls. They can be overly trusting, self-pitying, overly sensitive, lazy, indecisive and an escapist from reality. They also tend to sleep… a lot… You may make plans with a Pisces person only for them to sleep for the entire day.
