Astrology 101 – What Hard Dance genre would your zodiac sign be?
Okay, so you all know that the Alive At Night team is kind of obsessed with the zodiac and stars. With a zest for reading and learning more about the trippy happenings of the universe, we’ve tried to combine this passion with Hard Dance music by psychoanalysing artists based on their star signs. Sounds pretty freaky, right? Well, yeah, it’s a little on the weirder side of what we do but it’s also painfully true.
After writing about duo compatibility and each zodiac sign’s classic personality traits, as a little bit of fun, this time we decided to take a look at how the zodiac signs would be represented by different Hard Dance music genres. Based on the typical descriptions and traits of each star sign, we came up with a genre that would suit them best.
Aries – Uptempo Hardcore or Speedcore
Being the first sign of the zodiac, Aries, or better known as the overly-competitive relentless risk-takers who ‘act now, think later’ would best be represented by a genre that’s hard, fast and extremely chaotic. Hot-blooded Aries is all about living a high tempo life, having loads of energy and living on the edge and there’s no better genres to represent this sign than Uptempo Hardcore and for some real intense rams, Speedcore. One of Aries’ downfalls is that they tend to not focus on the finer details and can be a little sloppy at times, which is regularly seen in the production quality of these genres. However, their individuality, fighting spirit, vivaciousness and sassy edge makes up for them cutting corners at times.
Taurus – Early rave
Slow n’ steady Taurus are all about keeping it basic and they also hate adapting to new things, which led me to join them up with Early Rave. The link between Taurus and the genre was inspired by all of the old Hardcore-heads who are adamant on remaining loyal to the old genre and not following Hardcore’s new ventures. Taurus people also display immense perseverance, they never give up and are also quite a practical sign, oh, and just like the ole’ Hardcore veteran they can be quite stubborn and refuse change!
Gemini – ‘Rawphoric’ aka atmospheric raw
Gemini people may often referred to as two-sided, dual-personality or bipolar, however it’s this duality that makes them so interesting – they’re literally walking paradoxes! Also being extremely creative people who like to think outside of the box and not restrain themselves to one thing, this led me to associate them with the rising ‘sub-sound’ atmospheric raw, a specific sound within raw Hardstyle that combines the best of both worlds. Gemini is also a very adaptable, inventive and curious sign who hate routine and boredom, which is another reason why they would best be represented by this interesting and captivating sound!
Cancer – Emotional melodic Hardstyle
Hate to say it, but Cancer is probably the most emotional of the zodiac signs and at times can be frustratingly whiney, just like emotional, euphoric Hardstyle! I’m not talking about the happy kind of Hardstyle, I’m talking about the bundle of artists who make music that makes fans cry more than it makes them dance. However, with all this emotion, Cancer is also a tender, intuitive and family-oriented sign; which is similar to the how melodic Hardstyle makes you grab the closest person in the crowd and embrace them a hug. Listening to melodic and emotional Hardstyle is something that should be done in small doses.
Leo – Mainstream Hardcore
Leo – the majestic Lion of the zodiac. This sassy diva of a sign never turns up to a party without a massive entrance and that’s exactly what ‘mainstream’ Hardcore is all about! This intense and dramatic genre is classic, popular, creative, dominant and refuses to take second stage. Leo thrives on being admired, which is similar to mainstream Hardcore always wanting to come out as #1, despite the rising popularity for Uptempo. Public image is important for Leo, and also the Hardcore genre, which doesn’t want to be deemed as anything less than legendary. As a coincidence, Hardcore goddess Korsakoff and long-standing legend Neophyte just so happen to be Leos.
Virgo – Early Hardstyle
Generally speaking, Virgo people are quite pleasant to be around (if they’re not criticising the life out of you), leading me to one obvious genre that best represents their typical personality- Early Hardstyle. These majestic people are extremely particular, detailed and cautious, but they can also be purists and uptight as hell. This latter trait is comparable to Early Hardstyle fans claiming that “new Hardstyle is fucking shit” and endlessly whinging about production quality etcetera. With Early Hardstyle following a certain winning formula, this organised and methodical approach resonates within the personality of Virgo people.
Libra – Euphoric AF Hardstyle
Idealistic Libra live in a world of rainbows, sunny days and happy feelings and their peaceful attitude can be comparable to the happier sounds of Hardstyle. Bouncy and majestic Tweeka-tunes with summer vibes and uplifting melodies are quite similar to the Libra personality; they are easy-going people who hate conflict and like to get along with everybody. On the flip side, just like happy Hardstyle’s lack of intensity can make the sub-genre be easily dismissed as ‘not worthy’ or ‘not hard enough,’ Libra individuals working abilities and intelligence is also often overlooked.
Scorpio – The angriest f*cking raw Hardstyle to ever exist
Symbolised by the Scorpion, Scorpio individuals are known as the hypersexual, super passionate, all-around difficult and most misunderstood sign of the Zodiac. This notion of being misunderstood resonates with the extreme sounds of raw Hardstyle, a sub-genre that can be mistaken for just a load of ‘sound’ and no substance. Some people may misconstrue the extremities of raw as being overly angry and aggressive with no story-line or charm, however once this complex, turbulent and mysterious sound is understood it’s initial judgement is banished. This is similar to Scorpio people; one may think that they’re all axe murderers, but many Scorpios are capable of having a clean, happy conscience.
Sagittarius – Happy Hardcore/UKHC
God bless our fellow Saggies! These overly-optimistic, thrill seeking adventurers are stimulating to say the least and from my perspective can be linked with the optimistic, uptempo sound of Happy Hardcore. Many people (especially in The Netherlands) don’t take Happy Hardcore seriously, and that’s something that resonates with Sagittarius people – despite having emotions (very, very deep down) they are often misconstrued as being happy and carefree all the time. Reckless and irresponsible in their nature, Saggies also don’t particularly care what others think of them, just like UKHC, a genre that continues doing it’s own thing despite the hate from Hardcore ‘purists.’
Capricorn – Industrial Hardcore
Known as the most ‘serious’ (and even boring) member of the zodiac, Capricorn are controlled, dry and detailed people, similar to Industrial Hardcore, a genre that’s based on the finer details and sound design and can also sound quite disjointed. Capricorn people feel the need to impose their traditionalist values upon others, however they can be extremely ambitious people who are goal oriented and also have concentration of steel.
Aquarius – Freestyle
Floaty in their nature, detached Aquarius hates being bound together by commitment, or genres – making them the perfect candidate for the “f*ck genres” movement Freestyle. They want a taste of everything, want to be mentally stimulated and also love a world filled with possibilities. This is similar to Freestyle as you are offered with an eclectic range of genres and a fantastic experience that keeps fans active. Another thing that Freestyle and Aquarian people have in common is their rebellious nature and the fact they thrive on shock factor.
Pisces – Subground
If there’s one thing that Pisces loves it’s to be relaxed and move at their own glacial pace. They don’t abide well to schedules and are late EVERYWHERE. The only chilled out sub-genre in Hard Dance music is Subground – if I had it my way I’d place Pisces people under melancholic trance or meditation music, however Subground will do for these chilled out fish. The spirituality of Pisces and their mysterious nature can be paired up with this genre as it’s something that sounds great, but is also a little difficult to understand in terms of its aim and direction.
